Grid simulations in WP2

Introduction

In the Flexibel Project, the several research topics concerning harmonics and stability in future grids are studied.

In order to perform these studies, a grid simulation model is needed. Because of its flexible programming capabilities, the Matlab/Simulink simulation environment of The Mathworks is used for this purpose.

Leystad test grid

In order to start with a realistic base case, an existing test grid in Lelystad in The Netherlands is used as an example. The Lelystad test grid was set-up and monitored by Continuon in The Netherlands.

ECN and TU/e worked together to establish the base case model. A web view of the base case model can be found here (this can take some time to load).

In order to view the model, the Adobe SVG Viewer plugin for Internet Explorer must be downloaded and installed.. You can use the right mouse button for help and navigation in the model.

Simulation cases: The following simulation cases are anticipated:

  1. Lelystad network including some existing DER (Base Case),
  2. Base Case + large Wind farm,
  3. Base Case + CHP in each single house,
  4. Base Case + 20 m2 PV on each single house,
  5. Base Case + large Wind farm + CHP and 20 m2 PV in and on each single house.

Research topics Under the simulation cases above, the following research topics will be investigated

  1. Network stability, response on slow variations,
  2. Network stability, response on fast variations,
  3. Behavior (ride-through or switching-off) and protection of der during a short circuit in the network,
  4. Excess of reactive power in mv-substations due to der,
  5. Effect of harmonic and sub-harmonic current emission of der power electronics,
  6. Effect of background harmonic voltage pollution in the network, on harmonic current emission of DER power electronics.
